It receives its name from the Spit, a sandbank stretching south from the Hampshire shore for 5 km (3.1 mi). WebSpurn was to become a busier place in the 19th century, beginning during the French Wars when signal stations were set up on the Point in 1796 and 1803, and a barracks was built there in 1804. One assumes that plenty of strong drink was quaffed during these years but we know of no actual inn until the arrival of a lifeboat and crew in 1810. The informative guide provided a history of the lighthouse and restoration, he noted points of interest. 144 steps later we could a sample the views from the top of the lighthouse, absolutely stunning views.
