WebJan 26, 2010 · I checked the usual places. Removed the sag 341 and upgrading to the 343 (7 bolt side cover). The shaft type is different so the 341 (4 bolt side cover)levers will not work. May need to be from a chevy2.. not sure because some car models had the shift rods going to a frame pivot and not straight to the 3-on-tree. Here is a pic of the 343.

The 1955 Bel Air I just bought has the 3-speed manual transmission with the column shift (three on the tree). It doesn't mesh well from neutral to either first or reverse. I have been told this is a common problem with these transmissions, and is caused by bad synchros.

It looks like the Hurst shifter for the Munice sits about 4 inches farther back on the trans than the Hurst does on the Saginaw.
